Incentives For 2009 Hybrid Cars
The federal government had in place certain tax incentives to promote the sale and usage of hybrid cars. In 2006, the rules prevailing (which continue to 2010) for incentives for 2009 hybrid cars were as follows: |
|
- The vehicles should have been purchased on or prior to 12/31/2010 and be put into service before 12/31/2005.
- Only the original owner was eligible to claim the credit on a car that should be a new hybrid vehicle, and one that qualified. A used hybrid vehicle did not qualify for such credit.
- The credit was available only to the original owner. If, for example, the vehicle was purchase by a leasing company, then only the leasing company could claim such credit.
- In the event of a qualifying vehicle, on which tax credit has been availed, being sold to a tax-exempt entity, it is incumbent on the seller, who has availed the credit to disclose to the tax-exempt purchaser in a document, the amount of tax credit availed.
- The vehicle should be used primarily only in the United States.
- The credit depends on the date of purchase of the vehicle.
- Any new laws pertaining to tax credits on hybrid cars might require the taxpayer to recapture the hybrid tax credit should they sell their hybrid vehicle.
- If alternative minimum tax applied, the credit would not reduce the tax burden.
- The credit would reduce the regular tax liability but cannot be carried forward as a negative liability.
- Hybrid tax credit should be the last credit to be availed of after availing of all other credits.
- A negative credit cannot be carried forward or transferred.

This is where the hybrid car steps in. Hybrid cars use a rechargeable battery as well as gasoline. The system helps to reduce fuel emissions. The hybrid engine uses the battery and not gasoline when initially accelerating. Hybrid gasoline motors shut off when the car is stopped. When the car re-starts, it runs on electricity. More..
