The prominent feature of the 2009 Ford is its large bright grille, which some might find a bit over-the-top. But there’s no faulting the smoothly arched roofline and attention to detail which makes the Edge one of the most attractive in the crossover range.
The interior is somewhat conservative with an upright instrument panel and controls. While the layout is attractive, it lacks that contemporary feel. The front seats are generous and comfortable. The back and second row seats can be reclined. The layout is a 60:40 ratio, cargo to passengers. The sloping rear window marginally restricts the cargo area.
The suspension appeals to nearly all drivers, soft enough to absorb most shocks yet sensitive and positive at turns. The V-6 power plant is powerful enough to move the fully-loaded Edge effortlessly up gradients. But the lack of manual control over gears can be a bit stifling.
Among the outstanding facets of the 2009 Edge is its panorama-style Vista roof, a voice-activated navigation system and Ford’s SYNC control for entertainment and communication. Attractive optionals are 20-inch chrome wheels, and a power lift gate. An interesting new optional feature is the real-time traffic and weather information system by Sirius Travel Link which also gives you prevailing gas prices at gas stations in the vicinity.
Other standard features are anti-lock brakes, roll stability control, front-seat and side curtain airbags. The Ford Edge has scored high in almost every insurance-industry and federal government crash tests. It has been awarded the IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2009.
